Aigoual
Massif Aigoual
The Mont Aigoual massif is located in the southern part of the Cévennes. It is subject to Mediterranean and oceanic climatic influences, which gives rise to significant cumulative rainfall. Its altitude (peaking at 1565 m) gives it a mountain climate in winter and thus makes it possible to practice Nordic activities.
On the geological level, one meets there at the same time the granite and the schist. The vegetation is varied (beech forest, coniferous trees, moors ...). The massif was the subject of a vast reforestation programme at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century to deal with the problem of erosion resulting from overexploitation of the forests.
The Aigoual Massif is crossed by numerous drailles (transhumance paths) and hiking trails, making it a privileged site for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and Nordic walking in winter.
